MURDER ON THE RAMPAGE
Terrible Tragedy at Salem, Indiana

Lafayette, Indiana, June 23-Full particulars were received today of a shocking murder that happened at Salem, Indiana, a small place south of this city. It appears that on Friday morning two men named Heffron and Halstead had a violent quarrel in the saloon of the former. In the afternoon, while Halstead was passing the saloon, Heffron coolly walked out, drew a revolver and fired four shots, one of them taking effect in the heart of Halstead, killing him instantly. To make sure of his bloody work, Heffron then lifted up the body and with the butt end of the pistol beat the man's brains out.
Great indignation is felt, and it was with great difficult that a mob was prevented from doing some lynching on the spot. Heffron is a noted desperado and a brother of Col. Horace Heffron, renounced for his connection with the "Sons of Liberty."
