This may help some with the Ohio Falls.
The Portland Canal
The Portland area of Louisville according to a historical marker said
that;
"French immigrants established a community here in 1806, in 1814 it was
surveyed and platted. By 1837 it was incorporated as a suburb of
Louisville. It was an early river port and boatbuilding center - 41
steamers had been built by 1855."
The Portland Canal was created to bypass the Ohio Falls which was a
navigational hazard and is operated by the Army Core of Engineers.
The area between the Ohio River and the Portland Canal was called
Shippingport (spelling may be wrong) and the home of Big Jim Porter who
rifle is at the Filson Club in Louisville.
The Ohio Falls is in Kentucky, because the Ohio River is in Kentucky and
the Falls of the Ohio or the Ohio Falls is a Navigational Hazard and not
a township or village.
This of course is from memory and I stand to be corrected.
