Jeremiah CARTER went to Crawford Co., IN after the Civil War to find his half-sister, Susannah (born CA 1840, the daughter of James Madison CARTER and Susannah RAY). She is last found in the 1850 census in the household of Joel and Malinda RAY in Sterling Twp, Crawford Co., IN. These were her mother's parents. While searching, Jeremiah met and married Melinda Elizabeth MELTON. They had five children who lived to be adults: Mary Ann who married John Wiley MARSHALL; Lily who married Israel STANDIFORD; Alice; James; and Elzone who married Alva CUMMINGS. The family farmed for many years near the town of English. Any information on these people would be greatly appreciated!

Looking for information on any BELCHER or TRUSTY families that lived in Crawford and Orange Counties in Indiana. Especially the families of John BELCHER and William BELCHER whom I believe were brothers, but can't prove it. John was born @1776 and William @1765. Both were in Orange Co. in 1830. Many descendants moved into Crawford Co. between 1819 and 1860.

I have traced my family from Richland County, Illinois to Pike County, Indiana to Crawford County, Indiana. The obituary for my great great grandfather, William ELKINS, stated that "He was born in Crawford county,Nov. 26, 1825 and came to this county (Pike) many years ago." This obituary was in the Petersburg, In. newspaper, dated 26 Jan. 1920.

Looking for descendants of Hannah Catherine OWENS / CHASTAIN. Her name may have been Catherine Hannah. She married Benjamin CHASTAION in Scott County on Feb. 4, 1838. She was born circa 1820. She died Dec. 14, 1869. She applied for a pension from her deceased son, Matthew CHASTAIN, who was killed in the Civil War. She applied for the pension in Trimble County Kentucky, saying she was living on the Carrollton Rd. at Bedford, Ky., but she gave her postal address as Saluda Twp., Jefferson County, IN. She said it was about 20 miles from Madison, and about six miles from the Ohio River on the Bethlehem Rd. She and Benjamin lived mostly in Jefferson County from the time of their marriage until her death in 1869. They had ten children. I would like to know who Hannah's parents were and where her grave is located.

I just found your page via the compuserve genealogy newsletter. I see there is no researcher associated with the JONES surname. I have done some research regarding that name in Crawford County in the post 1867 time period. The JONES surname is also linked with the PADGIT, LAHUE, LANG and BAKER surnames by marriage in Crawford county. JONES is a surname assumed by George PENN in 1867. He was born as George PENN in New Jersey in 1846. I am trying to obtain additional information regarding more distant family ancestors.

I am looking for anything I can find about my ancestor, William Jefferson HAWKINS, b abt 1839 in Ohio or In and died between 1870-73 probably in Crawford Co., In. He and his wife, Serepta WILLIAMS were married in Crawford Co. in 1861 and had 4 children. We know the death occurred between the above dates because he is listed in the 1870 census and she remarried in 1873. We know he died young possibly in an accident. He was listed as a merchant in the census.
