Mr. Shreve,…died last night, after an illness of five years, at his residence, 1422 South Third Street [Louisville, KY].
…Estate is Valued At $10,000,000.
Charles Upton Shreve, 88, member of one of the Louisville’s pioneer families, died at his residence…Mr. Shreve’s father, Thomas T. Shreve, operated the first rolling mill and one of the first banks in Louisville. His uncle, L. L. Shreve, in business with his father, was the first president of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad and also was the first executive head of the old Louisville Gas Company….

Mr. Shreve was born Jan. 12 1828, in Cincinnati. Several months later he was brought to Louisville, and about 15 years afterward entered in St. Mary’s College…Graduating, he began a course at Hanover College, graduating in the class of 1845…
Several years later Mr. Shreve …entered the Louisville Law School and was a member [of] the first graduating class.
…. Later Mr. Shreve became connected with the business of his uncle, L.L. Shreve & Co., and then became a member of the banking firm of J.P. Curtis & Co.

…He married Mrs. Sallie B. McCandless, of Cincinnati, a granddaughter of Commodore Thomas Truxtun.
Mr. Shreve is survived by his three daughters, Mrs. William Trabue, of this city; Mrs. Tracy Underhill, of Houston, Tex., and Mrs. T.P. Sutterwhite, Jr. of St. Louis; L.L. Shreve of Detroit, and Charles U. Shreve, Jr., of New York; his stepmother, Mrs. B. Shreve, of Chicago, and a sister, Mrs. Paul Harvey, of Santa Barbara, Cal.
