JOSEPH, THOMAS posted by Michelle LeMay on Thursday, March 5, 1998

Searching for information to obtain supporting proof that my children's great-great grandfather (on their father's side) was Cherokee.  According to their grandmother IRENE THOMAS, her father EVERETT THOMAS was Cherokee.  I obtained a copy of his birth certificate from Lee County in BETTYVILLE, KY.  The birth was officially recorded by his father in 1943, however, Irene informed me that the family did not register as Cherokee in the official rolls prior to that time.  Everett was born on November 18, 1898 (may be an error, see below).  His mother was SALLY JOSEPH ( full-blooded Cherokee) born in Leslie County, KY and was 35 when Everett was born (birth would be 1863 or 1853-see explanation below).  His father was JAMES THOMAS (half Cherokee, probably on his father's side but uncertain) and was 40 when Everett was born (birth would be 1858 or 1848 in WEST VIRGINIA).  At the time that Everett filed for his birth certificate in 1943, he was living Laona, WISCONSIN. It also states that he was the 6th child born to James and Sally. There is a possibility that an error was made (possibly by Everett) and that the year of his birth should be 1888. I suspect this because Irene's birth certificate states that she was born in May 1926 and that Everett was 38 at the time of her birth.  If his age here is accurate, than he would have been born in Nov. 1888, which would mean that SALLY was born in 1853 and JAMES in 1848. Irene was born in Fillmore, KY.  It did not occur to Irene to collect specific information before Everett or her mother passed away and any supporting paperwork has been lost or misplaced by her 6 older brothers.  Any information would be greatly appreciated!
